Effect of Sn Addition on the Two-Step Aging Behavior in Al-Mg-Si Alloys for Automotive Application
نویسندگان
چکیده
Aluminum alloys of the 6xxx series which contain excess Si or Cu are well used for the automotive applications because of the high age-hardening response. The effect of addition of small amount of Sn on the two-step aging behavior in 1.2%Mg2Si-0.5%Si in excess alloy and 1.2%Mg2Si-0.7%Cu alloy was investigated by means of hardness measurement, differential scanning calorimetry, and transmission electron microscopy. G.P.I zone formation in these alloys aged at 25°C was suppressed by the addition of Sn. The Sn addition to Cu added balanced alloys rather than to excess-Si alloy was effective to suppress the negative effect of the two-step aging.

This article reports the effects of various artificial aging methods and lubrication modes (dry, mist, wet) on the recorded cutting forces and chip morphology in drilling Al-Si-Mg (A356) cast alloys. In the course of this work, the work part sampled were as-received alloy (T0), solution heat-treated alloy (SHT) and then aged alloys at 155°C, 180°C, and 220°C (T4, T6, T61, T7), respectively. The...

Nanoclusters formed during natural aging cause the negative effect of the two-step aging in the age-hardenable Al-Mg-Si alloys. The relationship between the clustering behavior during natural aging and the two-step aging behavior was studied using the hardness, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical resistivity measurements, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation in the...

Two types of nanoclusters, i.e. Cluster (1) and Cluster (2), play a strongly important role in the bake-hardening (BH) response in Al-Mg-Si alloys. Different formation behaviors of two types of nanoclusters were studied by means of hardness, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), electrical resistivity measurement, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM observation in ...

Pre-precipitation clustering and chemical nature of the metastable precipitates in aged Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) alloys have been investigated by atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for better understanding of the two-step aging behavior and the effect of excess Si. After a prolonged natural aging, co-clusters of Mg and Si atoms are observed in addition to se...

The dependence of the mechanism of age hardening in Al-Mg-Si alloys on their Si content, the pre-aging conditions and addition of Cu has been investigated. For this purpose, the solute clusters and the metastable precipitates in aged Al-Mg-Si alloys have been characterized by a three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Atom probe analysis results have revea...
